about
A song written in January 2021 and recorded February 2022. A verse of reflection, written after reading my ancestor’s gaol record & discussing it with my kid. He was locked up for being Romany (Gypsy), essentially. I am thinking about all the prejudice and discrimination Romany people have lived with going back centuries.
So I’m giving thanks to my ancestors for their survival and also expressing recognition and sorrow because that stuff never should have happened.
I wrote this the day after Holocaust Remembrance Day, and knowing if my grandad and his family had been in a different part of Europe at that time there’s a chance none of my own family would be here. I wonder how it must have been for my granddad and his family to feel the weight of what was happening on the other side of the channel, and wonder if it would reach them.
lyrics
Oh the judgement that befell you
I wish I could go back and tell you
It wasn't fair how you were treated
But we survived
Against the odds
We made it through
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you
I wouldn't be here
